Derestrict Your Kawasaki LAMS Bike and Unlock Its Full Power

Unlock the Full Potential of Your Kawasaki LAMS Motorcycle

If you’re riding a Kawasaki motorcycle restricted under the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) and now hold your full licence, it’s time to consider unlocking your bike’s full potential. At Advanced Tuning, we offer professional Kawasaki LAMS derestriction services, allowing your motorcycle to perform the way it was originally engineered to.

Many LAMS-approved Kawasakis share engines and mechanical components with their full-power counterparts. The only difference is a set of engineered restrictions that limit performance to meet LAMS power-to-weight regulations. Once you’re no longer restricted by your licence, these factory limitations can be safely removed to significantly improve throttle response, mid-range torque, and overall riding enjoyment.

Why Is My Kawasaki Restricted?

To meet Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) rules in New Zealand, Kawasaki modifies certain bikes to meet power-to-weight ratio limits. While this keeps things safe for learners, it holds back performance once you’re ready to ride unrestricted.

Kawasaki uses three main methods to restrict their LAMS-approved bikes:

1. Throttle Restriction / Throttle Stop

One of the most common methods Kawasaki uses is a mechanical or electronic throttle stop. This device limits the amount of throttle that can be physically applied, reducing the engine’s ability to draw in air and fuel. With less airflow, the engine cannot generate its full potential output, which directly reduces acceleration and top-end performance.

In models like the Kawasaki Z650L and Vulcan S LAMS, this restriction is often the main limiting factor, making the bike feel sluggish even though it shares the same engine as the full-power version.

2. ECU Mapping and Software Limitations

Beyond physical restrictions, Kawasaki also programs the Engine Control Unit (ECU) with a detuned map. This software is responsible for managing the engine’s performance and is modified to meet LAMS compliance through several key changes.

The rev limiter is typically set lower than in the unrestricted model, which caps how high the engine can rev. Ignition timing is often retarded, reducing the efficiency and power of each combustion cycle. The fuel mixture may be made leaner, which lowers performance and can increase engine hesitation under load. Additionally, if the motorcycle uses an electronic throttle system (ride-by-wire), the ECU can limit how quickly or fully the throttle plates open, dulling responsiveness even further.

Together, these software-based limitations drastically alter the riding experience and make the motorcycle feel less capable than it actually is.

3. Air Intake Restriction

Some models are also fitted with intake restrictors. These can take the form of smaller airbox inlets or additional blocking plates designed to reduce the amount of air entering the combustion chamber. With restricted airflow, the engine struggles to produce full power, even if the throttle and ECU have been modified. Intake restrictions are a simple yet effective method of compliance, but they also severely hinder engine breathing and performance.

Common LAMS-Restricted Kawasaki Models We Derestrict

  • Kawasaki Ninja 400 – Designed for LAMS, but small gains can be made with tuning

  • Kawasaki Ninja 650L / Z650L – Shares the same engine as the full-power model

  • Kawasaki Versys 650L – Adventure-ready bike with restricted ECU map

  • Kawasaki Vulcan S LAMS – Cruiser style, but held back by both ECU and throttle stop

Derestrict Your Kawasaki LAMS Bike

Why Derestrict with Advanced Tuning?

Derestricting a motorcycle isn’t as simple as removing a physical block or flashing a generic tune. Every engine is slightly different, and safety is always a priority. At Advanced Tuning, we use custom ECU remapping techniques and carefully follow best practices to ensure your Kawasaki performs as intended—reliably and safely.

We start by identifying which restrictions are present on your specific model. From there, we either reprogram the ECU using our advanced tuning software or, where necessary, adjust mechanical components such as throttle stops or intake limiters. The result is a motorcycle that not only feels significantly more powerful but also runs smoothly across the rev range.

Get More Out of Your Kawasaki

If your Kawasaki feels like it has more to give, it probably does. Whether you’re riding a restricted Z650L or Vulcan S LAMS and want to experience its full performance, or you’re simply ready for a smoother, more responsive bike, we can help.

Advanced Tuning offers ECU tuning and derestriction services across New Zealand, either at our workshop or via ECU mail-in service. We work with both individual riders and workshops, looking to provide upgrade services to their customers.
